Older search engines make use of a mechanised fuel pump and valve assemblage which is influenced by the engine crankshaft, usually via the timing belt or perhaps chain. These types of engines make use of simple injections which are basically very exact spring-loaded regulators which will open and close at a specific fuel pressure. The pump assembly includes a pump which in turn pressurizes the fuel, and a disc-shaped valve which rotates at half crankshaft speed. The valve includes a single beance to the pressurised fuel on one side, and one aperture for each injector on the other. As the engine turns the valve discs will fall into line and produce burst of pressurized gasoline to the injector at the canister about to enter its power stroke. The injector control device is pressured open by the fuel pressure and the diesel-powered is injected until the valve rotates out of position and the gasoline pressure to that injector is cut off. Engine speed is usually controlled by a third compact disk, which revolves only a few degrees and is controlled by the throttle handle. This disk alters the width from the aperture whereby the fuel passes, and therefore how long the injectors are held open up before the fuel supply can be cut, controlling the amount of fuel inserted.

This clashes with the more modern method of using a separate mechanical fuel pump (or pair of pumps) which supplies fuel constantly at ruthless to each injector. Each injector then provides a solenoid which is operated simply by an electronic control unit, which enables more accurate control of injector opening instances depending on additional control circumstances such as engine speed and loading, resulting in better engine performance and fuel economy. This design is also mechanically simpler than the put together pump and valve design and style, making it generally more reliable, and less noisy, than its physical counterpart.
